Worshippers walk the approach with a pot lid balanced on their heads. A faith for fortune in war and in contests.
About this place
Itatetsuwamononushi Shrine is a shrine in Beppu, Eicho, Minamikyushu, Kagoshima Prefecture. Its former shrine rank was unranked shrine. It is famous under its alternative names 'Kamafuta Shrine' and 'Kamafuta Daimyojin'. It is known for 'Kamafuta wish-making', in which worshippers carry a kettle lid on their heads, and 'Kamafuta throwing', in which unglazed kettle lids are thrown. In 'Kamafuta wish-making', if you can walk the roughly 10 m from the torii gate to the offertory box without dropping the lid on your head, it is said to ward off misfortune (some of these lids are very large).
