Overview
The funerary temple of the Shimazu. It was lost in the anti-Buddhist movement, and only the graves remain.
About this place
Fukushoji was a large Soto-sect temple in Ikenoue-cho, in the castle town of Kagoshima Castle, Kagoshima District, Satsuma Province (now Ikenoue-cho, Kagoshima, Kagoshima Prefecture). It was the family temple of the Shimazu clan, lords of the Satsuma domain, but was abolished in 1869 (Meiji 2) by the anti-Buddhist movement. Its mountain name was 'Gyokuryuzan'. It was a direct branch of Sojiji, a head temple of the Soto sect. In 1394 (Oei 1), Sekiya Shinryo, a priest from the Shimazu clan who had earlier built Myoenji, was invited as founding priest by the 7th head of the Shimazu clan, Shimazu Motohisa, and founded the temple, converting it to the Soto sect.
