About this place
Hakozaki Hachiman Shrine (Hakozaki Hachiman-jinja) is a shrine in Izumi, Kagoshima Prefecture. The date of its founding is unknown, but in Eiroku 5 (1562), after Shimazu Yoshitora restored Muryojuin Joganji (the present Satsumonsan Johgan-ji) and its eight halls of the Shingon sect, monks of Joganji moved Kamichishiki Hachimangu (this shrine) from Mutsukida to its present Kamichishiki, and it became the chief place of prayer of the Satsushu family in a form combining Shinto and Buddhism.
