About this place
Kiyomizu Magaibutsu is a Buddhist site in Minamikyushu, Kagoshima Prefecture. Although called "magaibutsu" (cliff-carved Buddhas), almost no Buddha statues are carved there; it is characterized by many gorinto pagodas, Sanskrit characters and sutra stone tablets. The oldest are thought to have been made around the end of the Heian period, and the newest, dated Meiji 28 (1895), are a hokyointo pagoda, an Eleven-Headed Kannon statue and an Amida Nyorai statue that Yoshida Jundo commissioned from the local stonemason Kihara Sannosuke to carve.
