About this place
Tokko Shrine is a shrine in Okojikami, Yamagawa, Ibusuki, Kagoshima Prefecture. Its alternative name is 'Karaimo Shrine'. Its former shrine rank was village shrine. It enshrines Tamakazura Ooemochi no Mikoto, which is the spirit title of Maeda Riemon. In 1705 (Hoei 2), Maeda Riemon, a merchant of this area, saw sweet potatoes being grown in the Ryukyus, thriving even on wasteland, and thought of having them grown in Satsuma; he brought them back and spread the cultivation method among the people.
