About this place
Hondo Suwa Shrine (Hondo Suwa-jinja) is a shrine in Amakusa, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is regarded as the guardian shrine of all Amakusa. It was founded on August 1 of Koan 6 (1283). During the two Mongol invasions, a heroine named Amakusa Dayu Okura Futoko, lord of Hondo Castle, led her naval forces into battle and won distinction through the protection of the deity Suwa Daimyojin. In gratitude for this divine favor, on August 1 of Koan 6 (1283) the shrine was established as the guardian shrine of the Amakusa clan's domain by enshrining a divided spirit from Suwa Taisha.
