About this place
Kitaoka Shrine (Kitaoka-jinja) is a shrine in 1-chome Kasuga, Nishi Ward, Kumamoto, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is said to have been founded in the Heian period by transferring a divided spirit from the Gion Shrine in Kyoto, and it is an old shrine whose history ranks alongside Fujisaki Hachimangu in the Kumamoto city area. Its former shrine rank was prefectural shrine (kensha). It was formerly called Gion Shrine or Gion-gu, but after the ban on mixing Shinto and Buddhism it was renamed Kitaoka-gu in 1868 (Meiji 1), and then given its present name in 1872 (Meiji 4).
