About this place
Kokuzo Shrine is a shrine at Teno, Ichinomiyamachi, Aso, Kumamoto Prefecture. Because it stands north of Aso Shrine, a former Kanpei Taisha, it is called Kitamiya (North Shrine). It is a shrine listed in the Engishiki, and its former shrine rank was prefectural shrine. The Engishiki register of shrine names lists four shrines for Higo Province (Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto Shrine, now Aso Shrine; Asohime Shrine, now Aso Shrine; Kokuzo Shrine; and Hikino Shrine), and this is one of the four and one of the oldest shrines in Kumamoto Prefecture.
