About this place
Konoura Shrine is a shrine in Konoura, Misumicho, Uki, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is said to be the Sannomiya of Higo Province. Its former shrine rank was district shrine. Together with Aso Shrine (Aso), Kosa Shrine (Kosa, Kamimashiki District) and Kengun Shrine (Higashi Ward, Kumamoto), it is called one of the four Aso shrines. The precincts cover 2,182 tsubo. They include a stone five-storey pagoda thought to date from the early Heian period, and a memorial stone and a monument to those who died for the country, connected with the six patriots who killed themselves on the summit of Mount Odake in Misumicho, Uki, during the 'Shinpuren Rebellion' that took place in Kumamoto in 1876 (Meiji 9).
