About this place
Ungan Zenji is a Soto-sect temple in Hirayama, Matsuocho, Nishi Ward, Kumamoto, Kumamoto Prefecture. Its mountain name is Hokezan or Iwatoyama. It is popularly known as Iwato Kannon. This comes from the principal image, a four-sided stone Bato Kannon (horse-headed Kannon) enshrined in the cave Reigando in the inner sanctuary at the back of the precincts. It is said to have been built by Toryo Eiyo (Torin Eiyo), a Yuan-dynasty Zen priest who came from Ningbo during the Northern and Southern Courts period in Japan.
