About this place
Matsui Shrine is a shrine in Kita no Marucho, Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture. Its former shrine rank was district shrine. It was founded in 1881 (Meiji 14) by the former retainers of the Matsui clan and other related people. The enshrined deities are Matsui Yasuyuki, the first head of the Matsui family and chief retainer of the Hosokawa clan of Higo, and Okinaga, the second head. The precinct land is where Kato Masakata built a retirement residence for his mother, the nun Myokei, in 1622 (Genna 8); after the Kato family was dispossessed it became the residence of Hosokawa Tadaoki (Sansai), and after Matsui Okinaga was appointed lord of Yatsushiro Castle it became the residence of successive Matsui heads.
