About this place
Yatsushiro Shrine is a shrine in Myokencho, Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is also called Myokengu or Myoken-san. Its former shrine rank was prefectural shrine. It consists of three shrines, the Upper, Middle and Lower, of which the Lower Shrine is now the main shrine. Along with Soma Myoken in Fukushima Prefecture and Nose Myoken in Osaka Prefecture, it is said to be one of the Three Great Myoken of Japan. According to the Myokengu Jitsuroku, written in 1730 (15th year of Kyoho), the Upper Shrine was first enshrined at the summit of Yokotake in 795 (14th year of Enryaku). In 1160 (1st year of Eiryaku), the Middle Shrine was built.
