About this place
Shindaibutsuji is a Shingon sect Chizan school temple in Tominaga, Iga, Mie. Its mountain name is Gohozan. The principal image is Rushana Buddha. This temple is said to have been founded in 1202 (Kencho 2) by Minamoto no Yoritomo as a temple of imperial request for Retired Emperor Go-Toba, with Chogen as founding priest. Chogen is known as the monk who directed the restoration of the Great Buddha and Great Buddha Hall of Todaiji in the Kamakura period, and this temple became Todaiji's Iga Bessho. The name Shindaibutsuji comes from Chogen Shonin adding the character "shin" (new) to the temple name out of respect for Todaiji.
