About this place
Daihoji is a Tendai sect temple in Aoki, Chiisagata District, Nagano. Its mountain name is Ichijozan. Its founder is said to be Jo-e, son of Fujiwara no Kamatari. The principal image is Shakyamuni Nyorai. It is known for its National Treasure three-story pagoda. According to the temple tradition, the Ichijozan Kan'in Reihoki, Daihoji was founded in the Taiho era (701 - 704) of the Nara period by Jo-e, son of Fujiwara no Kamatari. It was later restored in the Daido era (801 - 810) of the Heian period by Gishin (head of the Tendai sect) at the prayer of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro.
