About this place
Hotaka Shrine is a shrine in Hotaka, Azumino, Nagano. It is an Engishiki-listed shrine (Myojin Taisha) and the Sannomiya of Shinano Province. Its former shrine rank was small national shrine (kokuhei shosha), and it is now a Beppyo Shrine of the Association of Shinto Shrines. Besides the main shrine (village shrine) in Hotaka, Azumino, it has an inner shrine at Kamikochi in Azumi, Matsumoto, and a summit shrine on the summit of Mount Okuhotaka, and so it is popularly called the 'Chief Guardian Shrine of the Japanese Alps'. Its annual festival (the Ofune Festival), held every year on September 27, is famous.
