About this place
Shakusonji is a Tendai sect temple in Komoro, Nagano. Its mountain name is Nunobikiyama. It is also called Nunobiki Kannon. It is Temple No. 29 of the Shinano Thirty-Three Kannon pilgrimage. It is the birthplace of the legend "led by a cow to Zenkoji". The principal image is Sho Kanzeon Bosatsu. The ennichi is May 8 in the new calendar. According to the temple's tradition, it was opened by Gyoki in 724 (Jinki 1) in the Nara period, and enshrined a Sho Kannon said to have been made by Prince Shotoku. It was destroyed by fire in 1548 (Tenbun 17) in the Sengoku period, when Takeda Shingen advanced into the Toshin region and conquered Rakuganji Nyudo Masakata and Nunoshita Nihei Masatomo.
