About this place
Minakamiyama is a volcano in Matsushiro, Nagano, Nagano, with an elevation of 659 meters. Its relative height from the plain at its foot is about 280 meters. Some documents write the name as Minakamiyama with different characters. It is an andesite lava dome that was active about 300,000 to 350,000 years ago. Because the andesite was a highly viscous magma, no ash eruption or lava flow occurred. The Matsushiro swarm earthquakes from 1965 to 1971 occurred directly beneath Minakamiyama, and the mountain rose by about 1 m along with this seismic activity.
