It has Katsushika Hokusai's "Phoenix Glaring in Eight Directions" painting and is also a temple associated with Kobayashi Issa. According to the temple's tradition, it was founded in 1430 (Eikyo 2) as the Pure Land Senso-rin Nenbutsuji, and in 1472 (Bunmei 4) it was established by Ogino Bingo-no-kami Tsunetomo, lord of Karita Castle, with the master Futaku Genkei as founding priest. It is the family temple of Fukushima Masanori, who was dispossessed in 1619 (Genna 5) to Takaino Domain in Shinano Province on the grounds of unauthorized rebuilding of Hiroshima Castle, and a mausoleum stands on the grounds.
