About this place
Nyoirinji is a Jodo-sect temple on Mount Yoshino, Yoshino, Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture. Its mountain name is Tonoosan. The principal image is Nyoirin Kannon. Behind the main hall are the mausoleum of Emperor Go-Daigo, who died in Yoshino, called Tonoo no Misasagi, and the tomb of Prince Yoyasu. It is said to have been founded by the priest Nichizo in the Engi era (901-922) of the Heian period. During the Northern and Southern Courts period, it was made an imperial prayer temple when Emperor Go-Daigo established his temporary palace at Yoshino, but the emperor died without being able to return to the capital and was buried on the hill behind the main hall.
