About this place

Aoshi Shrine is a shrine on Yukyuzan in Nagaoka, Niigata. Its principal deity is Makino Tadatoki, and the grounds include a shrine to the war dead (Shokonsha) associated with Kawai Tsugunosuke and the Chuken Shiro Shrine. It is selected as one of the Echigo Nagaoka Hundred Views. It was first called Aoshi Daimyojin, the honorific name of its deity, Makino Tadatoki, the third lord of the Nagaoka Domain of Echigo, and received its present name through the Shinbutsu Bunri order. At its founding it was inside Nagaoka Castle, then moved to Yukyuzan; when Nagaoka Castle fell in the Hokuetsu War it was temporarily moved to Tochio, and after the war it was enshrined at its present site. Its former shrine rank was village shrine, later prefectural shrine.
