About this place
Choanji is a Tendai-sect temple in Kareigawa, Bungotakada, Oita Prefecture. Its mountain name is Kongosan. Choanji is one of the Rokugosan temples (Rokugo Manzan), a group of Tendai-sect temples widely distributed around the Kunisaki Peninsula. Many of them have a legend of having been founded by Ninmon in 718 (Yoro 2), but in fact the Rokugosan temples are thought to have been established somewhat later. As Seieizan Kozanji, which had governed the Rokugo Manzan, declined in the Heian period, in the Kamakura period it took the position of governing more than 100 temples of the Rokugo Manzan.
