An old shrine facing the Suo Sea.
About this place
Kuranashihama Shrine (also written with a variant character) is a shrine in Nakatsu, Oita Prefecture. The Gion Festival of Yasaka Shrine, a precinct shrine (on a weekend in late July), is called 'Shimo Gion' and, together with 'Kami Gion' of Nakatsu Shrine nearby to the south-west, makes up the Nakatsu Gion. It stands on the east bank of the mouth of the Nakatsu River, in a place once called Kuranashihama (also written with other characters). Kuranashihama was a scenic spot even mentioned in the Man'yoshu.
