About this place
Ryugenji is a Jodo-sect temple in Usuki, Oita Prefecture, and a branch temple of Chion-in, the head temple of the Jodo sect. Its mountain name is Shiunzan and its sub-temple name is Karakuin. It was founded in 1600 (Keicho 5) by Inaba Sadamichi, the first lord of the Bungo Usuki domain, with Enyo as founding priest. According to legend, Enyo, who had dreamt of a raging dragon, went to this place carrying a hanging scroll of the six-character Name by Emperor Go-Yozei, made the dragon ascend to heaven, and founded the temple. Its temple treasures include the dragon's jewel, scales and claws (not open to the public).
