About this place
Hattoji is a Tendai-sect temple in Kagami, Yoshinaga, Bizen, Okayama Prefecture. Its mountain name is Shokyozan, and its principal image is the Eleven-Faced Kannon. Going up along the Hattoji River from Yoshinaga Station on the JR Sanyo Main Line, you reach Hattoji, at an elevation of 539 metres, which straddles the three provinces of Bizen, Harima and Mimasaka (the foothills of Mount Hattoji). It is an ancient temple said to have been founded by the priest Dokyo in the reign of Emperor Shomu, and in its day it was famous as a centre of mountain Buddhism. At its height it was a sacred site with eight sub-temples, sixty-four monks' quarters, and Buddhist pagodas such as a thirteen-storey pagoda.
