The funerary temple of the Ikeda, lords of the Okayama domain. It is also known as a Zen hall that takes in practitioners from abroad.
About this place
Sogenji is a Zen temple of the Rinzai sect, Myoshinji school, in Enzan, Naka Ward, Okayama, Okayama Prefecture. Its mountain name is Gokokuzan. It is the family temple of the Ikeda family, lords of the Bizen Okayama domain. The principal image is the Eleven-Faced Kannon Bodhisattva. It was founded in 1698 (Genroku 11) by Ikeda Tsunamasa, the second lord of the main Ikeda line of the Bizen Okayama domain, to pray for the repose of his great-great-grandfather Tsuneoki and his father Mitsumasa. He also designated it as his own family temple, and from then on successive lords were memorialised here. He ordered his retainer Uesaka Geki to carry out the construction and invited the priest Zetsugai as founding priest. It is called the foremost Zen temple of Bizen Province.
