About this place
Namba Yasaka Shrine is a shrine in Naniwa Ward, Osaka. Its former shrine rank was village shrine. It is often written with a different character for "saka," but this is a mistaken spelling. In the reign of Emperor Nintoku, when an epidemic began to spread throughout this area, Gozu Tenno appeared and was enshrined, which is said to be the beginning of the shrine. Since then it has been called "Namba Shimomiya" and became the guardian deity of the whole Namba area. In the Enkyu era (1069-1073) it was famous as a shrine enshrining Gozu Tenno, and twelve subtemples stood in a row besides the shrine temple.
