The starting point of the Chichibu circuit. With Saigoku and Bando it makes up the Hundred Kannon of Japan.
About this place
Shimabuji is a temple of the Soto school in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture. Its mountain name is Zuikyozan. It is Temple No. 1 of the Chichibu pilgrimage route. It is also designated a historic site of Chichibu City. Principal image mantra: On aroriki'a sowaka Pilgrim's hymn: How grateful—a flower of the Dharma that is more than a single scroll; its number is the four myriad volumes, in the ancient days of the temple According to the origin story in the Kannon Reigenki, it was founded in 1007 (4th year of Kanko) by Gentsu.
