About this place
Rakuyaji is a Tendai sect temple in Rakuya, Koka, Koga, Shiga. Its mountain name is Fukuushozan. Its in-name is Jishoin. The principal image is Juichimen Kannon (Rakuya Kannon). It also houses a statue of Yakushi Nyorai, one of the Three Great Buddhas of Koga. It is one of the Six Great Temples of Koga. It is said to have begun in 792 (Enryaku 11), when Saicho, who visited the Somasho area of Koga District in search of timber for the Konpon Chudo of Enryakuji, himself carved a Juichimen Kannon statue into a living oak tree with three bows for each cut of the blade, and built a hall to enshrine it.
