About this place
Kogenji is a Shinshu Otani school temple in Doganji, Takatsukicho, Nagahama, Shiga. Its mountain name is Shiunzan. It is known for its National Treasure statue of Juichimen Kannon. The Kannon statue is enshrined in Doganji Kannon Hall, which belongs to this temple. In 736 (Tenpyo 8), when smallpox was spreading in the capital, Emperor Shomu is said to have ordered Taicho to pray to avert the disaster. Taicho carved a Juichimen Kannon, built Doganji, and prayed for health, long life and the prosperity of all the people, and afterward the worries are said to have ceased.
