About this place
Mononobe Shrine is a shrine deriving from the Mononobe clan. According to the Engishiki Jinmyocho compiled in the Heian period, they are distributed over a wide area from eastern to western Japan. Many shrines have had their locations become unknown since the medieval period, and most of the current Mononobe shrines were identified through surveys from the Edo period onward, with some differing theories. Many of the shrines have as their main deities Umashimaji no Mikoto (Umashimaji), the first head of the Mononobe clan, or Nigihayahi no Mikoto (Nigihayahi), their ancestral deity.
