Overview
A vermilion bridge over the Daiya river. Once only the shogun and imperial envoys could cross it.
About this place
Shinkyo is a vermilion-lacquered bridge spanning the Daiya River in Kamihachiishimachi, Nikko, Tochigi. It is one of the cultural properties that make up the World Heritage Site 'Shrines and Temples of Nikko', and is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Standing at the entrance to the shrines and temples of Nikko, it is called both the symbol and the front gate of Nikko, and some praise it as the most beautiful bridge in Tochigi Prefecture. With Shinkyo as the boundary, the shopping street to the east is called Higashimachi (Demachi), and the Nikkozan precincts to the west are called Nishimachi (Irimachi).
