About this place
Heiwa Kannon is a stone Buddha built in the 1940s in Otanimachi, Utsunomiya, Tochigi. Heiwa Kannon is in Otanimachi, about 8 kilometers west of central Utsunomiya. To mourn the Japanese war dead around Otanimachi in the Pacific War, a standing stone statue of Kannon Bosatsu, 88 shaku 8 sun 8 bu (26.93 meters) tall with a waist circumference of 20 meters, was carved entirely by hand into the tuff layer wall of a former Oya stone quarry over six years starting in 1948 (Showa 23), soon after the end of the war.
