About this place

Tsurugi Shrine is a shrine standing at Mikoshi on Mount Tsurugi, Sugao, Higashiiya, Miyoshi, Tokushima Prefecture, at an elevation of around 1,420 m. The main shrine, Ootsurugi Shrine, is at an elevation of around 1,810 m, and Ootsurugi Shrine is also described here. The year of founding is unknown. When Iyayama was opened up, Oyamazumi no Mikoto was enshrined and made the chief guardian shrine of Iyayama. It was formerly called Ootsurugi Gongen, but was renamed Tsurugi Shrine in the early Meiji period, was ranked among the Sukei Taisha in 1870 (Meiji 3), and became a district shrine in 1873 (Meiji 6).
