About this place
Hanyu Gokoku Hachimangu is a shrine (Hachimangu) in Oyabe, Toyama. The exact year of its founding is unknown. According to tradition it was founded in 718 (Yoro 2). On the other hand, historical sources such as the Azuma Kagami and the Kikki record that Hanyu Yataro Morikane, a relative of "Nyudo Genzanmi-kyo (= Minamoto no Yorimasa)", was driven into a corner by the Taira side in 1181 (Yowa 1) and took his own life. From this record, one theory holds that the Hachiman army was invited from Yamashiro Province to Hanyu in Etchu Province by the Hanyu clan, close kin of the Settsu Genji.
