About this place

Oyama Shrine is a shrine in Tateyama, Nakaniikawa District, Toyama. Its former names were Tateyama Gongen and Oyama Gongen. It is an Engishiki-listed shrine and the ichinomiya of Etchu Province. Its former shrine rank was Kokuhei Shosha, and it is now a Beppyo Shrine of the Association of Shinto Shrines. It takes the sacred mountain Tateyama as its sacred object and enshrines two deities as the deities of Tateyama: Izanagi no Kami (Tateyama Gongen Oyama no Kami, honji Amida Nyorai) and Ame no Tajikarao no Kami (Tachio Tenjin Tsurugidake no Kami, honji Fudo Myoo). In the era of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism it was a strongly Buddhist shrine and was the source of Tateyama Shugendo. It was also a prayer site for Emperor Genmei and Emperor Go-Daigo.
