About this place
Takaoka Daibutsu is a seated bronze Amida Nyorai at Daibutsuji in Odemachi, Takaoka, Toyama. Inside the pedestal is a corridor displaying hell paintings and other works, and in the central room sits the head of the wooden Great Buddha that was destroyed by fire in 1900. The Takaoka Daibutsu is a crystallization of the skill of Takaoka copperware craftsmen and is a symbolic tourist spot of Takaoka. It is designated a Takaoka City Tangible Cultural Property. It is counted among the Three Great Buddhas of Japan, alongside the Nara Daibutsu and the Kamakura Daibutsu. It is also one of the Three Great Buddhas of Etchu, together with the Kosugi Daibutsu and the Shogawa Daibutsu.
