Overview
Sulphurous steam rises from the ground. In Tateyama belief this was taken to be an actual hell.
About this place
Jigokudani is a volcanic terrain zone on Murododaira in Tateyama, Nakaniikawa District, Toyama (formerly Etchu Province). It lies at an elevation of 2,300 m. It was formed, together with Mikuriga-ike pond and others, by the last activity of the Tateyama volcano. It used to be one of the sightseeing points of the Murododaira trek. There was formerly a hot spring inn near the fumaroles, but it was closed because of the danger of volcanic gas. Since 2011 the whole of Jigokudani has been closed to entry. There are several lodgings in the surrounding area that use hot spring water piped from Jigokudani.
