About this place
Tamatsushima Shrine is a shrine in Wakaura Naka, Wakayama, Wakayama Prefecture. It is a shrine listed in the Kokushi Genzaisha record. Its former shrine rank was village shrine. It is also written with a variant character for 'shima'. It enshrines three deities, Wakahirume no Mikoto, Okinagatarashihime no Mikoto and Sotoorihime no Mikoto, together with Akanoura no Mitama. Since ancient times it has been called Tamatsushima Myojin, and it came to be revered as one of the three gods of waka poetry, alongside Sumiyoshi Myojin and Kitano Tenmangu (from the early modern period, Kakinomoto no Hitomaro replaced Kitano Shrine).
