About this place
Shonai Shrine is a shrine in Tsuruoka Park, Tsuruoka, Yamagata. It is one of the shrines built across Japan in the Meiji period to enshrine the ancestors of former domain lords. It enshrines four ancestors of the Sakai family, lords of the Shonai Domain, as its deities. It was founded in 1877 (Meiji 10) on the site of the main keep of Tsurugaoka Castle (Tsuruoka Castle) at the petition of former domain residents. At its founding, three figures were enshrined together: Sakai Tadatsugu (1st), Sakai Ietsugu (2nd) and Sakai Tadakatsu (3rd), who were the founder, forebear and domain progenitor of the Sakai family, lords of the Shonai Domain.
