It enshrines a sokushinbutsu, a self-mummified monk: an ascetic of the Yudonosan faith who made a buddha of his own body.
About this place
Dainichibo is a Shingon sect (Buzan school) temple in Tsuruoka, Yamagata. Its mountain name is Yudonosan, its in-name is Kongoin and its temple name is Ryusuiji. The principal image is Yudonosan Gongen. It has the nationally designated Important Cultural Property "Standing Bronze Nyorai" (estimated to have been made around the 6th - 7th century). Its formal name is Yudonosan Sohonji Ryusuiji Kongoin Oami Dainichibo. Its registered name as a religious corporation is "Yudonosan Sohonji Oami Dainichibo". According to the temple's tradition, it was founded in 807 (Daido 2) by Kukai, and its founder is said to be his disciple Tokai. It stands at the Oami entrance of the pilgrimage routes to the Three Mountains of Dewa.
