A National Treasure pagoda standing among the cedars, held to be the oldest in northern Japan.
About this place
The Mount Haguro Five-Story Pagoda is a five-story pagoda built in the Muromachi period on Mount Haguro in Tonge, Haguro-machi, Tsuruoka, Yamagata. Mount Gassan, Mount Yudono and Mount Haguro, the training grounds of mountain asceticism in Yamagata, are together called the Three Mountains of Dewa. Of these, Mount Haguro has the Sanshin Gosaiden, which enshrines the deities of the three mountains, and this pagoda stands among the trees along the approach path leading to it. Nearby is the giant cedar "Jijisugi", about 1,000 years old and 10 m in circumference. It is said to be the oldest pagoda in the Tohoku region and was designated a National Treasure in 1966 (Showa 41).
