About this place
Ayukai Hachimangu is a shrine in Shirataka, Nishiokitama District, Yamagata. Its former shrine rank was prefectural shrine, and it is now a Beppyo Shrine of the Association of Shinto Shrines. Its principal deity is Emperor Ojin (Hachiman), with Ukanomitama no Mikoto (Inari) enshrined as an associated deity. It is said to have begun in 1060 (Kohei 3), when Minamoto no Yoshiie, who came down to this land as Chinjufu Shogun, invited the Hachiman deity, chose the shrine site with a brocade banner as the sacred object, and enshrined it. In the Edo period it was made a prayer site of the local lords, the Uesugi clan, and was designated the chief guardian shrine of 18 neighboring villages.
