About this place
Zenpoji is a Soto sect temple in Tsuruoka, Yamagata. Its mountain name is Ryutakusan. The principal image is Yakushi Nyorai. Together with Myogonji and Saijoji, it is one of the three great prayer sites of the Soto sect. It began when a grass hermitage was built by Myodatsu of the Tendai sect around the Tenkei to Tenryaku era (938 - 957) in the Heian period and was called Ryugeji. In the Enkei era (1308 - 1311) of the Kamakura period, Gazan Joseki, the second abbot of Sojiji, taught at the site of Ryugeji.
