Overview
A hillside in Yuzawa. Sulphurous gas escapes so nothing grows, and only white rock is exposed.
About this place
Kawarage Jigoku is a fumarole area and sacred site in Takamatsu Banzawa, Yuzawa, Akita Prefecture. It is said to be one of Japan's three great sacred sites, along with Osorezan in Aomori Prefecture and Tateyama in Toyama Prefecture. Kawarage Oyu Falls is nearby. Its elevation is about 800 meters. Hydrochloric-acid-rich hot water eruptions have silicified the welded tuff bedrock over an area of 1.0 x 0.4 kilometers, giving a grayish-white landscape. Within this area there is an explosion crater formed by a steam eruption, and active fumarolic activity such as the emission of volcanic gas continues today.
