Overview
Some 26 hectares of marsh on the northwest flank of Mount Chokai. Its misshapen beeches and springs are a national natural monument.
About this place
A group of wetland springs of about 26 ha, spreading over the northwest foot of Mount Chokai on the Akita side. A nationally designated Natural Monument. Moss grows in clusters over a wide area, and the ball-shaped "Chokai marimo" can be seen only in the Shishigahana Wetland. The odd-shaped beech "Agarikodaio," about 300 years old, was chosen as one of the "100 Giants of the Forest." Walking paths are provided.
