About this place
Kanmanji is a Soto-sect temple in Nikaho, Akita Prefecture. Its mountain name is Kogusan and its principal image is Shakyamuni Buddha. It has long been known as a famous temple visited by literati and artists; Matsuo Basho visited in 1689 (Genroku 2) and introduced it in The Narrow Road to the Deep North. It is said to have been founded in 853 (Ninju 3) by Ennin (Jikaku Daishi), head of the Tendai school. Because of the beautiful scenery of Kisakata and the legend of Empress Jingu, the site was divined by feng shui and so on, and it is said to have been named Kozan Kanmanjuji.
