About this place
Hokoshima is an island of columnar joints in biotite hornblende rhyolite, located in Minami-Sugo-cho, Fukui, Fukui Prefecture. It is made of columnar joints formed about 15 million years ago when magma pierced the surrounding strata, and is an important island geologically for studying the columnar joints of Tojinbo and Oshima. Black pines and other trees remain at the summit, along with seabird nests, and it is also a popular island as a rest stop for anglers and drivers.
