Echizen has the largest share in Japan of fine handmade paper.
About this place
Echizen washi is Japanese paper made in the Imadate district (the former Imadate Town) of Echizen, Fukui Prefecture. Production continues as the number one washi-producing area in Japan in quality, variety and volume. Echizen hosho and Echizen torinoko paper are designated Important Intangible Cultural Properties. Also, on 11 December 2025 (Reiwa 7), Echizen torinoko paper was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage listing Washi.
