About this place
Yao Bikuni is a legendary figure of Japan. She is a bhikkhuni (Buddhist nun) who gained eternal youth and long life by eating something special (such as mermaid flesh). She is often called Happyaku Bikuni in Obama, Fukui Prefecture, and the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture, Obikuni in Mana-ko, Nishikata-machi, Tochigi, Tochigi Prefecture, and Yao Bikuni in other areas. According to surveys by Nakayama Taro, Hori Ichiro, Yanagita Kunio and others, legends about Yao Bikuni are found almost nationwide, except in Hokkaido, southern Kyushu and Okinawa.
