About this place
Hiyoko is a Tokyo souvenir born in 1912 at Yoshinodo in Iizuka, Fukuoka Prefecture. It is a confection (castella manju) in the shape of a chick looking up, and is also the company name of Hiyoko Co., Ltd., which makes the product. A yolk-colored bean paste made from white kidney beans called otebo (also called ote-imo) is wrapped in a skin made of flour, eggs and so on. It was originally a confection of Iizuka, which was in the Chikuho coal mining district.
